Golf Weekend Getaway: Women’s Clothing Essentials for the Perfect Golfer Look
There comes a time in the life of a woman who’s juggling family life with professional responsibilities when she could do with a break. And, I’m not talking about a break away from the husband and kids, but rather from the mundane settings – the same environment she is in day in and day out. Been there, done that.
With spring already here, and summer on its way, my husband and I had the idea of changing things up a bit with the help of a mini-break in the form of a golf weekend trip. Yes, even though I don’t have much experience. After all, Melbourne is Australia’s golfing capital with plenty of courses and options to choose from, so why not make the most of it?!
While we haven’t decided yet where we’d enjoy this trip, or when exactly as we’re still looking at websites, offers, and brochures, I know there’s got to be a mini golf course for Matthew to join in on the fun. I also know what I want out of my golf outfit, even if I don’t know the course’s dress code yet.
The Perfect Tops
There’s no golf outfit without the signature women’s golf shirt models that look a lot like polo shirts. What sets them apart from polo shirts, however, despite the obvious similarity in design is the fact the golf alternative differs in fabric, sleeve options, and fit. Unlike the regular polos made from cotton and cotton blends, golf polos are made from moisture-wicking materials like synthetic blends that are known for being sports performance choices.
This ensures a woman stays cool and comfortable with minimal sweat, minus the odour risk when on the course. Then, women golf shirts are available in short sleeves, long sleeves, as well as sleeveless models, as opposed to the short-sleeved polos. The last aspect where they differ is in the close fit of the golf polos, as opposed to the varied relaxed, oversized, and narrow regular polo choices.
As I said, I don’t know the course yet, so I can’t be certain about the dress code, but to be on the safe side I have my eyes on women’s golf shirts with collars. J.Lindeberg models are eye-catching with the neat and clean designs, button details, and I’m also keen on choosing one of their beautiful prints to add a bit of texture and colour to the outfit. A breathable design is a must as I’m not sure if sleeveless is an option, so I’m sticking to the moisture-wicking solution.
And, as weather can be unpredictable, I plan on getting a long-sleeved one too, having my eyes set on IBKUL’s Paulina mock neck top. Although, come to think of it, their solid colours are equally stylish. What also makes quality long-sleeve designs like these a wise investment is their UPF 50+ fabric, so they can be worn in the sun too, especially if we also consider the mesh underarm panels for added breathability.
Unlike my other shirts, these are must-haves for their longer length suitable for being tucked in the bottoms for a golf-approved result. As the just-in-case options, especially if hitting the links on a breezy morning, a mid-layer or lightweight jacket are top layer pieces I would swear by. All of these make for long-lasting investments one could also wear outside the greens in casual ensembles.
The Perfect Bottoms
Although it’s a game that requires tradition with the apparel, and the accepted is usually neat and casual clothing items, this doesn’t include athleisure essentials like your favourite tracksuits, yoga pants, tights, and shorts. What’s accepted in terms of bottoms, much like ladies’ golf shirts, are more modest designs fit for the golf course specifics.
Same as men’s attire for this sport, golf pants and shorts are the standard bottoms, with the needed stretch for flexible movements and swings. The good thing is, as women, we’re allowed a bit more femininity in terms of the silhouette and fit, as a more relaxed silhouette and a slim-fit are acceptable. I’m excited to also welcome skorts and skirts in my golf wardrobe, as they make for the ideal bottoms to pair with the tops in colour, and are ideal for those hot summer days.
The key here is to look only through the options of golf designs to ensure the length is as required. The SPANX’s Get Moving skort is perfect in it that it doesn’t only provide the needed coverage, and secure fit, but also has a storage pocket. For a girly look, Rohnisch’s Mira skort with pleated design is a considerable option. The bonus is it also comes with a side pocket!
The Perfect One-Piece Garment
For a more feminine outfit than skorts and skirts, one could always resort to wearing a dress. However, not just any dress would do, as even a tennis design may not meet the stricter dress codes of golf courses in terms of modesty. While there are sleeveless designs fit for those particularly hot days on the course, I’d prefer getting one with a collar and short sleeves, with a ruffled skirt below.
Add to this a combination of well-chosen accessories, like a women’s visor or cap, in a vivid colour, plus a pair of sunnies, and you’ve got the put-together golfer look. Finish up with a neat pair of golf shoes with soft spikes (if the course doesn’t allow sneakers), and you’re good to go.
